Beaufort Secure Design delivered a complete bespoke and sustainable solution for 85 replacement arch top aluminium windows and doors to 10 luxury apartments and a penthouse at the converted Malt House, a Grade 2 listed former brewery in Henley-upon-Thames. The project consisted of curved head casement windows and 14 double entrance doors in a special RAL 7012 grey powder coated matt finish for client Blue Space Property Group Ltd using Beaufort’s Classic System. Design architect was Giles Quarme, of London-based specialist historic building architects Giles Quarme & Associates, who comments: “The Malt House is an important listed building and well-known landmark in Henley-upon-Thames that required sensitive conversion for its new residential use.” A unique feature of the challenging project was the close collaboration between aluminium systems supplier’s technical department and the installer to meet the architect’s demanding specification. Beaufort’s support for the entire design stage of the work included technical advice on fabrication techniques, bespoke production data and specialist tooling to achieve the curved shapes of all the vents, sashes, frames and door leafs. “Everything on this complex project was bespoke and a lot of detail went into creating the required assembly methods, including profile cutting and corner crimping on the arched sections, which are unusual in aluminium” explains Beaufort’s Technical Manager Russell Yates. “Aluminium’s durable, aesthetic and highly-versatile qualities make it ideal for specialist applications such as the Malt House and, crucially, we were able to supply the necessary expertise to help make the project a success. Aluminium is also a very sustainable material as end-of-life products can be constantly recycled, so its use helps to reduce the impact on the environment,” adds Russell. The slim sightlines with flush glazed vents and arched heads to both frames and vents complement the building’s imposing exterior and satisfy the stringent demands of the local planning authority, particularly with regard to the building’s listed status. Similarly, the grey finish was specified in keeping with the property’s architectural character, with the added benefits of being low-maintenance and pollution-resistant. All windows and doors in Beaufort’s aluminium range comply with the latest Building Regulations on U-values, safety and security requirements. The use of argon-filled 28mm sealed units with soft coat laminated glass ensures optimum thermal performance. High security comes as standard with all windows and doors featuring multipoint locking and butt hinges on all arched sashes. Kevin Seedhouse, Construction Director at Blue Space Property Group comments: “Aesthetically the windows and doors look fantastic. Aluminium’s sleeker sightlines give a modern edge and really complement the building’s superb riverside setting.”
