Aluminium windows and doors were the choice for both new build and refurbishment at a major £600,000 London local authority project at Lisson Green Estate in Westminster.
Three large blocks of flats were refurbished, whilst a new block and a community centre have been built.
The existing flats originally had horizontal sliding windows with a timber sub-frame, but not in line with the new buildings, aluminium direct fix casement 28mm sealed units from the Beaufort Range have been fitted.
The windows are internally glazed with 6.4mm laminated Low-E glass for safety and to combat the high noise levels. Frames for the new build areas of the project were produced powder coated in a grey Syntha Pulvin finish. The refurbished windows are in white. In all, over 900 windows have been installed at the Lisson Green Estate, as well as more than 50 double doors with multipoint hook bolt locks. The doors are laminated on the exterior and have toughened glass on the interior.
A very large aluminium cill was called for. Normally we would expect it to be in the range of 80mm to 150mm, but in this case it was 240mm. Beaufort's experienced technical staff soon provided the solution and a 240mm cill was designed and supplied for the contract.
The Beaufort system was a strong selling point, as the local authority has shown a preference for aluminium in the past, recognising the long term benefits of its inherent strength and low maintenance qualities.
